There are a few minor and almost no major changes in DSM-5 that the patients and professional need to be aware of.1. The most remarkable structural change of the Fifth Edition is getting rid of 5-axial system. Good riddance!

The old classification grouped diagnoses down into independent dimensions called axes:

Axis I: all diagnoses except mental retardation and personality disorder

Axis II: personality disorders and mental retardation

Axis III: acute medical conditions

Axis IV: psychosocial and environmental factors making things worse

Axis V: Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), or a number between 0 and 100 that reflects patients’ well-being.

The new classification combines the axes together and let them rate the disorders by severity. In addition the NOS (not otherwise specified) label is changed to NED (not elsewhere defined).

2. The diagnosis Mental Retardation is changed to intellectual disability (intellectual developmental disorder)

3. Autism Spectrum Disorder is the new name and a single category for autistic disorder, Asperger disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). Probably a bad idea, in my opinion, as the same diagnosis will be given to a child with mild social deficit and severely autistic, nonverbal, and not functional one. In addition, it would be impossible to find out that there might be more than one disorder in this group, as all of them will carry the same name.

4. Binge Eating Disorder is a newcomer to the group – anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and eating disorder NOS – three different conditions which ended up in the Eating Disorders group only because they have something to do with food.

Ok, I have taken some time to actually read through DSM 5. While DSM has often been scrutinized–both for what it includes, as well as what it doesn’t–the back-lash against the newest edition has been particularly pronounced these past few months. Part of this stems from the micro-analysis that happens with many things in our modern world, though we have to admit that ego, resentment, and a misunderstanding of the process also plays a part. In addition, historical debate over DSM typically took place in-house; that is, by clinicians. With DSM 5, this has broadened to people who have little- to no understanding of the diagnostic process, its purpose, and its strengths/limitations. Thus, there has been a lot of negative press about DSM 5 in Huffington Post, NY Times, and other sources, often by people with practically no understanding of mental health.

Why 5 stars, you might ask? Because my review is based on DSM 5 as a book, not anything else having to do with DSM as a concept or tool. This particular edition ‘reads’ well, in that the text and lay-out is clear. In contrast to previous editions, the reader will be given more orientation to the book and how to use it. The diagnostic criteria is familiar and through the Table of Contents, Index, and quick-view pages, it is easy to find the diagnosis or category you’re looking for. Yes, it’s bulky and expensive, but you should have the large edition in your library for now; later, when you’re more familiar with the changes, you can buy the quick-reference guide.

As a child psychologist who conducts psychological and neuropsychological evaluations–for social service agencies, schools, the courts, and for families–DSM plays a prominent role in my work.

As a fan of Jodi Picoult, I was looking forward to reading her new novel. By the time I finished reading this novel, I was left with a feeling of astonishment. It is at once a storyline of such depth on the research of grieving elephants, and so rich in the storylines of those involved.

Jenna Metcalf’s mother, Alice, disappeared after a caregiver was trampled by an elephant. Jenna’s father has been in a psychiatric institution since that time, and Jenna lives with her grandmother. Jenna has not been able to forget her mother, or come to terms that her mother would leave her. Jenna does everything she can to find her mother, looking online and reads all of Alice’s old journals.

Alice was a research scientist studying elephant grief. Alice spent most of her time with the elephants that she loved. While in Africa, Alice met Thomas who ran an elephant refuge in New Hampshire. They went back to New Hampshire, married and had Jenna. All the while the love of elephants based their existence. As time goes by, Jenna is unable to find anything to support her queries about her mother. Jenna finds two people to help her, Serenity a doubted psychic, and Virgil Stanhope an older private detective. Jenna, Serenity, Thomas and Alice tell the story in alternating chapters.

Jodi Picoult does a great deal of research for her books, and with this one, she went to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, and met with Professor Abigail Baird. She also went to Vassar with Abigail Baird, who taught her all about the brain and how memory works. Then, they went to Botswana to work with Jeanetta Selier, a Ph.D. researcher who studies herds in the Tuli block. Jodi Picoult goes on to tell us about the fascinating aspects of elephants and what she learned.

I purchased this book because my four year daughter is a huge fan of the movie and to put it mildly is going through a "Frozen" phase. I thought I’d surprise her with it and it’s been worth ten times the amount that I paid for it. The only trouble is that she wants me to read it to her all the time. Or she takes it to preschool with her and wants her teachers to read it to her there. She will probably outgrow this phase soon, but for the pleasure it has given her so far it has given me a real bang for my buck!

It’s a fairly simplified breakdown of the plot of the animated film, with illustrations from the movie. Certain parts of the story are emphasized by writing words, phrases or full sentences all in capital bold letters. For example, when Anna tries to convince her sister to marry a prince she has only just met, it says:" Frustrated, Anna tried to stop her sister and accidentally PULLED OFF one glove." PULLED OFF for some reason is in bold caps while the accompanying illustration has Anna dangling the glove in the air. Every page or two have different examples of this. "Elsa had magical powers" and the "magical powers" will be the only part written in bold text but it doesn’t detract from the story. Still, the format and style are slightly unusual for a Little Golden book but like many other picture books, sometimes the text on the page will get bigger, or sometimes it will purposefully get smaller to compliment illustrations. It enthralls my little girl again and again and it also would be easy for a beginning reader to decipher.

I loved Little Golden Books as a child, and have passed many of them down to my daughter. They are all still in surprisingly good condition after 40 some years.

This is an important book in many ways. Perhaps most important because Sam Harris has, for the past several years, been a strong and outspoken critic of organized religion of all stripes. And one thing Harris can do better than almost anyone else, is make his case both clearly and powerfully without any added garbage.

If you’ve watched his many videos on YouTube, you know the man can make an argument and stand his ground without wavering one iota. And the depth of his research is impressive. If Harris kept his message in this same vein, he would stay safe and continue to be accepted as a credible spokesman for the atheist perspective for a long time to come.

But did he do that with this book? Not on your life. Harris, makes a whole different argument here, one that many may not be familiar with (but that is on display on his blog posts). Religion may be bunkum, he asserts, but spirituality (which may be the foundation of many religions), is a truly worthy pursuit.

No doubt that a great many atheists are not going to like this one little bit. After all, atheists can sometimes be as narrow-minded as believers. For many, spirituality is seen as practically equivalent to religion. But in this book he makes a strong case that nothing could be further from the truth. And he doesn’t make his arguments in a detached, completely intellectual way. Some might say that Harris has bought the spiritual kool-aid hook, link and sinker.

Harris is a long-time (25+ years) meditator, seeker after wisdom, student of a variety of spiritual practices and disciple of various teachers and gurus in several Eastern traditions. He most closely aligns himself with the school of non-duality or the direct path to awakening.

If anything uncontroversial can be said about Sam Harris, it’s that his work never fails to inspire strong and colorful opinions from just about everyone who encounters it. Depending on whom you ask, he may be one of the more brilliant thinkers around, a complete hack, or any of a mind-boggling array of subtle gradations in between. All of these views have arguable merit, and there will be many who go into Waking Up with a panoply of preconceived notions about what they might find here. Much has been made of Harris’ long-known affinity for meditation and Eastern spirituality, and his perpetual insistence that even the staunchest, most skillful rationalist neglects these at some considerable peril. Another Harris mainstay, most notably exemplified in The Moral Landscape, is a tendency to sharply challenge the conventional wisdom on where the boundaries of scientific inquiry truly lie, in what may at times strike some readers as a maddeningly quixotic attempt to reverse the long-standing unfashionable status of a rather comprehensive form of positivism. It will not shock anyone familiar with the author that Waking Up brings all of these threads together, and the reader’s satisfaction with the result, or lack thereof, will follow somewhat predictably, but it would be a mistake to avoid the book on that basis alone.

For those unfamiliar enough with Sam Harris to make much of the preceding paragraph, this volume can be summarized simply enough: it is a warning that most of us are missing important basic facts about how to live well, presented for the rationalist.

After completing the Hunger Games trilogy, I was eager for another great YA dystopian read but did not find it in The Maze Runner. I was initially intrigued by the book’s description. I knew there would be boys caught in a maze, with their memories wiped and little hope for escape, and I knew that the appearance of a girl on the scene would change everything. Mazes, games, riddles, and other sorts of non-traditional mysteries attract me, but Dashner’s execution of his book did not.

The plot was ill-paced. At times it felt slow, because Dashner introduced the reader to the maze in the same way the main character, Thomas, was introduced to it: both the reader and Thomas learn almost everything through numerous secondary explanations by characters. In more skilled hands, this might be an effective way of immersing a reader in a fictional world. Dashner’s exposition, however, felt cumbersome. As a reader, if I’m going to be told about a world rather than shown it, I’d better be told well. When I wasn’t slogging through Dashner’s writing, I was tumbling head-over-heels down its textual cliffs. Parts of the novel simply moved too quickly for any real character or plot development to occur. Readers are barely introduced to the main protagonist before being introduced to Teresa, the girl who supposedly changes everything. We really have very little sense for what’s changing, because this inciting action comes so shortly after our encounter with Thomas.

The plot also felt as if it had been constructed with little forethought. Each step or twist in the plot seemed as if it were generated on the spot as the author wrote his way linearly through this novel. Shazam! Such and such happens out of the blue. A quick patch-up of missing explanation ensues. Shazam!

A hundred or so teenage boys, their memories wiped, are trapped in the center of a gigantic shifting maze, many miles across. As the book begins, Thomas arrives in the “Glade” — the center of the maze, where they all live. The next day the first girl ever shows up too. And everything begins to change.

While living in the center of a giant ever-changing maze full of monsters is an extremely odd way to live, the boys have made do. After two years, they have a ruling council, they grow food, raise animals, and look after any sick or injured. They also send out trained runners to map the maze every day, in search of an exit, or a pattern, or some clue as to what they’re doing here.

With the arrival of Thomas and the girl, the Gladers’ carefully-crafted order begins to break down. Now solving and escaping the maze is immediately necessary. Fortunately, Thomas isn’t quite like all the other Gladers, and is able to help.

The premise is great, and the plot moves well. There’s a lot of action and the tension constantly builds. Unfortunately, the story failed in two important aspects for me.

First, the the maze itself is so absurd, the final explanation had better be pretty impressive for the story to hang together. And at least for me, the explanation was not plausible. Though, at least there *is* an explanation, which is more than can be said for some stories I’ve encountered!

The second weakness was the characters. I’d be okay with a somewhat implausible scenario if the characters were likable enough. But, Thomas is bland and whiny, and his only moments of greatness arise from his forgotten past. The other boys are mostly hostile and uninteresting. Not, mind you, that I expect deep, sophisticated personalities from amnesiac teenage boys!

The reviewers who criticize the main character’s negative tone or run-on sentences, or the lack of a cutesy, make-it-all-better ending, are missing the point of this story. The “voice” of the book is precisely why we love it so much.

Alexander is a real boy–warts and all. When real kids are upset, they pour it all out in a rapid stream of words (and to heck with grammar!)–and of course, everything feels like the end of the world to them at that moment. Judith Viorst captures that very well.

We can relate because Alexander’s life is like real life–lots of seemingly minor stressors can add up to one really rotten day; and because it isn’t just one problem, there isn’t a neat, tidy resolution at the end. In fact, in and of themselves, none of these things are really “problems”–just stuff you have to put up with sometimes. But when it all hits at once, it feels awful.

I think we’ve all had days like Alexander’s: the alarm doesn’t go off so you run out of the house late and with “bad hair,” you spill coffee on your white blouse (or new tie) just before the big meeting with the boss, you snag your nylons (or lose a button), the pop machine in the breakroom eats your money, you end up having to work overtime, so when you get out to the car you find a parking ticket because you forgot to feed the meter, and then at home, dinner burns on the stove and the kids are fighting! So at the end of it all you collapse in a heap and momentarily consider running away–FAR away. Maybe even Australia! And (adding insult to injury) nobody else seems to care or empathize, because all of these things are just little petty annoyances.

In nineteen ninety-three, John Grisham delivers a stunning and suspenseful novel, The Pelican Brief: A Novel, which revolves around the assassination of two Supreme Court justices, and the female protagonist Darby Shaw undeterred by the threats to her life uncovered a deep-rooted presidential conspiracy. Twenty-one years later, Grisham returns with a female protagonist for only the second time in his illustrious career as he crafted another stupefying legal thriller, this time not targeting the highest echelons of government but the deepest pits of the dark and perilous world of coal mining.

Set against the backdrop of the Great Recession of 2008, Gray Mountain by bestselling author John Grisham follows a 29-year-old female Manhattan associate attorney who gets downsized and is forced to leave her Wall Street law firm two weeks after the collapse of Lehman Brothers to work a year in the small-town of Brady, Virginia. Samantha Kofer’s journey from New York’s largest law firm to a small legal aid clinic in the heart of Appalachia with a population of 2200 as an unpaid intern borders on the ludicrous. Yet, that is the only possible route back to her job in the future.

When Samantha meets Mattie Wyatt, her new boss and the head of the Mountain Legal Aid Clinic, she realizes there’s much to learn and that Mattie has a lot to teach her on how to assist people who face genuine problems. It enables her to work on things she had never done during her three-year stay at New York’s Scully & Pershing. Apart from actually preparing a lawsuit, Samantha also gets to work her way around courtrooms, topping it with a tongue-lashing from a judge.

At first it might seem dismissive and reductive to call anything “a bathroom book”, or a “waiting room” book, (when was the last time you saw a book in a waiting room, anyway?) but unfortunately, this is the appellation under which most “factoid” (or light humor) books must labor.

However, were you to relegate this amazing book to your WC, despite the number of flushes you hear in a day, there would always be a line.

In the case of “What If”, this tragic location it is a far cry from what is deserved by the quality of writing, the subject and sense of humor herein. While obviously not having narrative, story or continuity, it has a greater consistency than could be called a topic- humor. OK, two. Humor and patience. Three: Humor, patience, and some amazing research.

A disclaimer from Randall Munroe: “I am a guy who draws pictures on the Internet. I like it when things catch fire and explode, which means I do not have your best interests in mind.”

I was instantly hooked.

Further: For the question that warrants a different sort of answer- “What happens if you set off a nuclear bomb in the center of a hurricane? Would the storm cell be vaporized?” Munroe has only to quote NOAA as they reply, “Needless to say, this is not a good idea.” Unsurprisingly, he cites their entire article. In fact, the text is followed by a goodly section of references.

There is no doubt he went the distance on these questions, and did so with a mind to give the most accurate, honest and flat out funny answer possible, in some cases going way further over the top than the original question requires. These are the truly great ones.

This will be a rather lengthy in depth review of the series collectively, excluding the prequel. I will start the review by giving my overall opinions and feelings, and conclude with basic book by book synopsizes, which I will try to just hit the big ideas and leave out major spoilers.

I picked up this book after seeing the trailer for the Movie. As a member of the Teen Wolf Fandom, I had to get in on the action since Dylan O’Brien, our favorite non-supernatural of Teen Wolf, and my personal favorite actor was playing the lead of the movie adaptation of The Maze Runner. He is a profound actor so I had to read the series before the movie came out.

BEST literary decision I have made in sometime. The second book of the series actually makes it into my top 2 favorite books of all time, number one is reserved for TFiOS, but The Scorch Trials is two for sure. TMR is easily in the top 5 and The Death Cure ranks in the top 10. This series is magnificent. Many compare it to THG or Divergent, which it is similar in the respect that it revolves around teens and is a part of a dystopian society, however the story in this series is unlike anything I have ever read. It is one of the only trilogies I have read that everything is not so black and white. You read this series and every 50-100 pages you find your self rooting for the bad guys, then rooting for the good guys, then no longer knowing who is good or bad, if the main characters are good or bad or what the heck is going on!!! Perhaps the protagonist is actually bad, maybe the antagonists are good, you just don’t know what to think!!! It is so profoundly written and keeps you guessing all 1000+ pages of the series, and about 200 chapters.

This is a good sci-fi series that draws you in right from the start. Thirty teenage boys trapped in the center of a maze, with no idea as to where they are or why. Worst of all, none of the boys have any memories of their life before they got there. Things begin to change dramatically when the last two teenagers arrive, Thomas and Teresa (the only girl!).

I downloaded the complete collection and read all the books at once. Each book picks up right where the last one left off, so there is not much repetition when you read one right after the next. I definitely thought the first book (The Maze Runner) was the most enjoyable. While there was plenty of action, the characters seemed to do the most thinking in this book. The pacing was pretty good, revealing little bits at a time–enough that you felt it was moving and that there’d be some resolution at the end of it.

The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure shed more light on the mystery of the maze, as well as what life is like in the real world. Dashner did a great job creating a really creepy and scary feeling of life outside of the maze, making some characters almost wish they were back there. There were a lot of very suspenseful scenes, however, I thought there was too much action. It seemed they just kept running from one fight to the next and it got tiresome. I know this book is really targeted to a younger audience, so that might not be a problem for them.

The fourth book was not what I expected at all. I was hoping for more of the story of Thomas and Teresa before the maze. The Kill Order, however, is set several years before Thomas and Teresa ever enter the picture. Instead, it describes how the world got to the state it did.

On the coast of Maine lives a wealthy ninety-one year old woman named Vivian Daly. Yet in her attic are trunks that reveal the secrets of her turbulent past.

It is the year 2011, and nearby in the same town of Spruce Harbor, lives a seventeen-year-old girl named Molly Ayer who has bounced from foster home to foster home, and is now in a situation involving petty theft that will require some kind of community service.

Told in beautifully evocative prose, the story unfolds in alternate perspectives, revealing what has happened to each of them, and how the parallel lines of their lives now converge to spotlight the similarities between them.

From Vivian’s early childhood in Ireland, to New York City, comes her passage on the Orphan Trains in 1929. A journey that will take her to Minnesota, from one home to another, never really knowing what home feels like, as she is treated like a slave and seldom has enough of anything, much less affection or love.

What Molly sees when she meets the elderly woman is a wealthy person who could not begin to understand her or her issues. But as the two of them clean out the boxes in the attic, the stories they share with one another reveal so much more than either could have suspected.

The characters, both the primary ones and the supporting ones, brought so much color and emotion to the stories that I could feel as though I were sitting in their midst, observing and listening to them. And as I neared the end of

I continue to be amazed at the things I learn about the history of this country from reading books. Orphan Train is based in fact; from the mid 19th century through the first quarter of the 20th century there was no system for dealing with orphans or what we would consider foster children today. It was left to churches and charitable organizations. And for those who feel that they are best left to deal with these social issues, I suggest you research the orphan trains because their solution was to take the children into various cities and give them away to anyone who wanted a child. No background checks, no follow up, no nothing. These children were left with people in the hopes that they would be given a good life. Some were, many were nothing more than house slaves. I’ll get off the soapbox now.

The book juxtaposes two lives – that of young Molly, a foster child of the current generation who lives with a family that is divided as to her presence. The “father” is pleasant to her and sees the good in Molly but the “mother” would rather she be gone and in all truth is only doing the foster thing for the money it brings into the household. The second life is that of Vivian – born Niamh, who becomes Dorothy and ultimately Vivian as she is left alone in New York after her family is killed in a fire. She is taken in by Children’s Aid and sent West on an Orphan Train to hopefully find a new home. What she finds at first is mistreatment, suspicion and abuse.

While on the train she meets some other orphans one of whom will play an important role in her life. Most of the other characters, though fade into the background as the story focuses on Vivian and Molly and how the two of them reconcile their pasts which are not as different as they might think.

As Ina Garten points out, “there is ahead of time and there is WAY ahead of time.” That’s why she’s included recipes that cover a wide range of “make ahead” schedules. Some of them, especially soups (one example is Zucchini Basil Soup) and gravy (Make Ahead Turkey Gravy with Onions and Sage) can be completely cooked and frozen for months. Others can only be made a few hours – or perhaps a few days- ahead of time.

This includes Thanksgiving turkey. Although it seems obvious now that she’s suggested it, I like the idea of cooking and slicing the turkey well before guests arrive….just have to make sure it stays warm.I bought this book primarily to streamline our Thanksgiving and other holiday menus – especially since we have both meat lovers and vegetarians in the family.

UPDATE: I tested two recipes on October 30th. See info below.

I plan to make Roasted Vegetable Lasagna for the vegetarian option, and freeze it and that solves the main course situation. There are also some side dishes and desserts in here that I’ll be contemplating, perhaps the Cauliflower and Carrot Puree (can be prepped ahead of time but not frozen).

UPDATE: I tested both and they’re delicious. I’ve made an extra lasagne for the freezer, following the freezer instructions, and plan to defrost and test how it works after being in the freezer. Will update again then. I don’t like to use any untested recipes although Ina’s are reliable.

The majority of these recipes are NOT frozen ahead of time so if you’re looking for a freezer cookbook this isn’t the one. You might want to keep this in mind but it didn’t bother me. I’m happy to simply save time and not be a frazzled host.

Ina has done lovely cookbooks before & always the photography is fantastic (it’s always nice to envision a recipe before making it). However, everyone on Earth knows you can make soups, dips, sauces, hummus, & lasagna ahead of time, & then heat/reheat. Everyone knows if you freeze something, it needs thawing before heating/serving (except for ice cream-like items, course). She "borrows" recipes from her former cookbooks for this book, which is extremely disappointing. She even showcases a dog biscuit recipe which you do ahead of time (you have to anyhow as that is what makes ‘em crunchy….leaving the oven door open as the oven cools following a King Arthur Flour recipe, or just plain using a very hot oven which she does. Then you just keep them in a tightly covered container or Ziplock bag – I don’t get the inclusion of a dog biscuit recipe in this cookbook at all. Does she serve her guests dog biscuits that she made months ago?

I don’t care for the style – she writes the recipe "as is" with no "do aheadedness" to it, that is the main (lengthy) focus to all the recipes, then she writes 1 to 2 tiny sentences in the corner on how a partial recipe component – or the whole recipe – can be made ahead. Everyone knows how to cut up veggies, put them in Ziplock bags and then toss together at the last moment. At times it’s only a couple of hours ahead that she talks about (which really doesn’t help a cook in the long run in most cases).

? Uncorking the wine one day ahead to taste it? You better have a Vacuvin or some other reliable method of "recorking", keeping oxygen out, and maintaining the integrity of that wine (especially if it’s expensive!) while you wait for the serving time!

I read this book on my Kindle in the French version (French is my mother tongue) as I bought it for my 100 year old mother who still reads one novel a week on her Kindle. She wanted to read this book as soon as she heard he had won the Nobel, this is a book that came out in 1978, the year Patrick Modiano won the Goncourt, a prestigious French prize. Before bringing it over to her, I read it, immediately taken in by the opening lines, unable to put it down. As I am now writing this critique, I just learned from an article in the Washington Post, that "Missing Person" is the book Peter Englund, a historian and the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, recommends to readers unfamiliar with Patrick Modiano. “It’s a fun book,” Englund said. “He’s playing with the genre.” And the genre he is playing with is mysteries. A detective, suffering from amnesia, sets out to recover his identity, following a variety of strange leads.

I’d like to recall here a very astute comment made sometime back by Anne Korkokeakivi, writing for THE MILLIONS, where she noted that French novels tend to be "… dark, searching, philosophical, autobiographical, self-reflective, and/or poetic (without being overwritten)."

Patrick Modiano’s "Missing Person" precisely fits this description. It is all these things, dark, searching, self-reflective and yes, poetic.

Consider the first lines: "I am nothing. Nothing but a pale shape, silhouetted that evening against the café terrace, waiting for the rain to stop; the shower had started when Hutte left me."

Amazing, isn’t it? The opening sentence is just three words, but how they resound. I am nothing. That is of course the whole theme of the book.

“I am nothing”* — the opening phrase of this 1978 novel which won the Prix Goncourt for Patrick Modiano, now the most recent winner of the Nobel Prize. The protagonist is a private detective named Guy Roland. Only this is merely the name given to him by Hutte, his former employer at the detective agency when he rescued him from total amnesia a dozen years before, and gave him a job. Now Hutte is retiring to Nice, leaving Guy with only one case to investigate: his own.

Yes, it is a totally implausible concept, but Modiano is less interested in the mechanism of Guy’s search for self than in what that search will reveal. The detective will follow a number of clues, each time finding somebody who will give him a tiny part of his story, but not the whole of it. The story is implausible too in that Guy gets almost none of the “Why bother me?” kinds of reaction that one might expect. Almost all his informants seem glad to talk with him; they invite him to their homes and give him boxes of souvenirs to go away with. This, even as Guy himself is having to pose as someone else to gain their confidence, trying on one possible role after another, as he gradually works out who he must be. And, as he does so, he begins to have flashes of memory of his own.

Artificial though the mechanism may be, there is none of the surrealism that one associates with many mid-century French writers. Modiano copies the “policier” style perfectly; his noir settings and vivid dialogue could come from the pen of Simenon or any of his followers. “The lights in the bar dimmed, as they do in some dance-halls at the beginning of a slow fox.

Yes, much of what negative reviewers of this book have to say is true: the writing is blunt and simple, the characters lack depth and complexity, it is quite male-focused in its subject matter and language, it has a bunch of quasi-religious mumbo-jumbo, and so on. This book should not be put on the list of great literature for the ages. There are doubtless many novels that cover subject matter from this book far more artfully. As I read the book, I was aware of its hokeyness and lack of redeeming literary qualities. I am, in fact, usually the first person to criticize books that read like this.
And yet, I have to say – and I feel a bit sheepish about this – that I found it meaningful, even profound at times. How can I say this, given my criticisms? First of all, unlike many reviewers, I did not approach this book with great expectations. No one told me that this was Shakespeare or Tolstoy; I had never even heard of it until it was recommended to me recently. And by the end of page 2, I had adjusted my expectations further. This clearly was not going to be winning the Booker prize.
But I found the book moving in its simple way. The characters deliver their statements without subtlety, but subtlety is more a literary virtue than a philosophical one. In fact, I essentially came to view this work as a life philosophy expressed as a fable, so I didn’t particularly mind that its messages were not buried far beneath the surface.
Are those messages novel? No, but what of it? Novelists have been recycling themes for centuries, becuase many themes are of enduring interest and relevance. The point is, the messages are worthwhile and deserving of consideration.

I’m a librarian and do a lot of reading. I also consider myself to be quite liberal and open-minded. I am also an abuse survivor, a fact which comes into play here.

A colleague of mine handed me this book, since she knows of my love for historical fiction. And I must agree, I was hooked immediately. The imagery is lush, the characters intriguing, the history of the Highlands absorbing. I found Claire to be an independent, intelligent woman and Jamie a brutish if not lovable man. Then I came to a part about 200+ pages in ******SPOILER ALERT****** where, after trying to get back to the place where she was originally swept back in time, so she could return to her husband, Claire is captured by the English troops. She is placed in another precarious situation with the sadistic Captain Randall, and Jamie literally swoops in to save her. High adventure all around, and they do escape. But what follows afterwards is Jamie’s decision to beat Claire with his sword belt. Claire puts up a fight but is no match for the large Scotsman and is beaten so much that she cannot sit or ride a horse for days. Gabaldon has Claire go through a deep moment of introspection where she realizes she is indeed impetuous and has been careless of the people in this time and of their land and ways…in this way, then, the beating is justified, and might even be seen as romantic and passionate as of course, Jamie and Claire make up afterward.

This incident may not bother some, but I would just like to post a warning to women who have suffered any sort of abuse (physical, sexual or otherwise) or trauma. I feel betrayed somehow and am not sure if I can continue reading the novel after this.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL is book number 9 in the series. The author, Jeff Kinney, continues his insightful wit, accompanied by cutting edge (if not exactly award-winning) artwork. The artwork is a cross between a Gary Larson cartoon and Scott Adams of Dilbert fame.

If you remember where we left Greg Heffley the last time we saw him, Greg was dealing with losing the attention of his best friend, Rowley Jefferson. That book ended with Greg leaving Rowley Jefferson hanging around the "Find a Friend station." In this installment, THE LONG HAUL, the Heffley’s go on vacation. But it’s a vacation like none you’ve ever seen before. Get ready, because in this vacation we will NOT be traveling with Ward and June Cleaver. This vacation does NOT include Wally and the Beaver.

Right off the bat, the Heffley’s journey takes a bad turn. Naturally, they are stuck in traffic for a long time. Alas, dad gets really nervous around high bridges: "The bridge to the beach was one of those kinds that’s really high above the water, and I’m sure dad wasn’t looking forward to being stuck on it for the next half hour." But that’s not the worst part. Somehow, a seagull ends up INSIDE the Heffley car, flying around, looking for Cheeseits. It’s complete mayhem! Perhaps the best sketch in the entire book is the illustration of the seagull flying around the car.

Here’s WHY this book is so funny (and why all the books in the series are so funny): The author writes about what ACTUALLY HAPPENS (or comes close to happening) in our family trips. The reason we laugh so hard at these diary entries is that we see OURSELVES here. The accounts hit very close to him–at least for me.

√ All in all, DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL is a hilarious, fun read.

‘The Long Haul’ is latest installment, a ninth one, in a worldwide known Diary of a Wimpy Kid series written by Jeff Kinney. For those who are maybe not familiar with the series this is funny comic previously published as online comic which because of popularity was transferred to book edition as well.

The main character Greg Heffley is a 6th grade student who more than anything wants to become popular, which is usual characteristic of kids his age. Greg writes his diary which is published in same way he wrote it in his notebook, full of humorous text and even funnier pictures.

Greg lives in an ordinary family with his parents and two brothers, the older Rodrick who is heavy metal fan and younger Manny, who is whiny kid. Greg’s best friend is Rowley Jefferson, boy of Greg’s age with annoying parents who due to their bothering make Greg’s parents looking like the best in the world.

Because of his everlasting desire to be cool, Greg is all the time pursuing some funny tasks like trying to enter Guinness Book and what is also usual, Greg is all the time victim of older boys who find him always at the wrong place and time…

The only thing Greg manages to do successfully is acting as guard for kindergarten children escorting them during lunch that is great opportunity to at least get free chocolate and skip part of math class…

In this latest installment Greg together with his family will embark on the trip in van. And hitting the road has never been more fun.

I suppose it’s barely possible there are people out there who don’t know every single detail about “The Princess Bride,” the cult-favorite movie directed by Rob Reiner and written by William Goldman, based on Goldman’s beloved romantic/comedy/adventure/fantasy book. I don’t think I personally know anyone like that, but I accept that statistically there must be someone like that out there.

But even if you know every behind-the-scenes detail — and you probably don’t, not all of them — you’ll still enjoy reading Cary Elwes talk about them in his new book, “As You Wish,” co-written with Joe Layden, on sale now. With charming self-deprecation and a sincere appreciation for the movie and the people involved, Elwes takes you from the moment he got the call from his agent all the way to the emotional 25th anniversary showing in 2012 in front of cheering crowds who knew every line.

Yes, there are the stories about Billy Crystal playing Miracle Max for 10 hours a day, for three days, without ever repeating a line, causing Reiner to leave the set so his constant, hysterical laughter wouldn’t ruin the shot again. There’s the story about Robin Wright’s dress catching on fire in the Fire Swamp (as it was intended to) and screenwriter William Goldman, who was on set, who had written the scene, screaming to help her. There’s the story of the actor in the Rodent of Unusual Size suit getting held up by police the day of shooting, and the one about Elwes trying to hide the fact that he broke a toe driving Andre the Giant’s ATV so he wouldn’t get fired, and how they managed to shoot the Cliffs of Insanity scene even though Andre couldn’t personally hold any weight and Wallace Shawn was terrified of heights.
