There are many different assessment tools available for people who want to learn more about their personality types, attitudes, behavior, and/or leadership styles. These include, for example, tests and inventories that measure individual qualities and abilities and those that relate these competencies to the interaction with other people. Over the years, I have used numerous assessment tools either offered at work or in graduate-level courses. These include, for example, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicatorà® (MBTI) and various leadership questionnaires for skills, styles, culture, interaction, and many others. I found all of these assessments interesting and helpful for my development, yet none of them alone would have been sufficient to give me a comprehensive understanding of myself in order to use my abilities most effectively. In other words, I found that the combination of several assessment tools ultimately helped me to understand myself as a person and my behavior towards peers at work, friends, and family members.

Strengths Finder 2.0 is an approach by scientists of The Gallup Organization to provide users with a tool to identify their strengths, or more precisely, their talents. Tom Rath explained it as follows: “We were tired of living in a world that revolved around fixing our weaknesses [and ...] we had discovered that people have several times more potential for growth when they invest energy in developing their strengths instead of correcting their deficiencies.” When I read this, I thought this is an interesting and powerful way to look at personal characteristics. I was anxious to use this Strengths Finder 2.0.

While the story itself is fascinating, the opening of Preston’s “The Hot Zone” is the best opening I’ve ever read, and I’m a writer myself, the author of four novels. His use of language hints at a writer with superior skills and with much to say. Some other reviewers fail to recognize that the book is not as much about the Ebola virus, but that the Planet Earth, tired of the prospect of five billion inhabitants, is trying to fight back and eliminate mankind. Aids, Ebola, they might be just the forerunners of an army of viruses with the goal of keeping the human population from exploding in ever-increasing numbers. Most of the books among today’s bestsellers have nothing to say; but “The Hot Zone ” is an exception. If nothing else, read the end, and memorize it if you can. I liked it so much that I’ve written it down and now I’ve included it here, I hope I won’t get in trouble with the publisher for unauthorized duplication of copyrighted material.

“In a sense, the earth is mounting an immune response against the human species. It is beginning to react to the human parasite, the flooding infection of people, the dead spots of concrete all over the planet, the cancerous rot-outs in Europe, Japan, and the United States, thick with replicating primates, the colonies enlarging and spreading and threatening to shock the biosphere with mass extinction. Perhaps the biosphere does not “like” the idea of five billion humans.

There are two extreme ways to interpret this book, as shown by the multiple ratings of 1 and 5.The first: This is a beautiful and sad story of unconditional love between a tree and a boy, in which the tree is generous and gives of itself to help the boy whenever he is in trouble. The metaphor in this case is that of a mother and a child, or God and a human.

The second: This is a story of a very selfish boy and a tree who loves him. Whenever he is in trouble, he returns to the tree who gives him another part of her self without ever setting limits, even though it makes her sad (and physically damages her) to do so. In this case, you can compare the story to a metaphor of an abusive, codependent relationship.

I can understand both views of this story, but the fact that the second interpretation is just as valid as the first makes me hesitate to recommend this book. Personally, I would NOT buy this book as a gift, or for my own children. If I had this book, I would wait to read it to my children until they reach the recommended 10 years old (or at least 8), and then I would discuss the book and its concepts (selfishness, limit setting/saying NO) with them. “What did you think of this book?” “Do you think that the tree/the boy did the right thing?” “What would you have done differently if you were the tree/the boy?” “If you were the tree, would you have said ‘NO’ to the boy at any point?”

A story that may be complementary to this one and more appropriate for younger audiences is “Ladies First”, also by Shel Silverstein (found in “A Light in the Attic” or “Free to Be, You and Me”), which is about a girl who always gets to be first to do everything, but in the end that is not to her advantage.

I admit, I’m a skeptical person by nature and I started this book wondering how the author would deal with the subject of the Shemitah. For those who might be a little hesitant as well, I hope to offer you some reassurances regarding the Biblical basis for the Shemitah, but first a brief summary of the book.

The Mystery of the Shemitah is basically a book about the Biblical Sabbath and Jubilee cycles and how they relate to socio-economic cycles in the context of a Biblical message of repentance. The author, Jonathan Cahn makes a pretty detailed case for his theory that financial and economic events of today may be influenced by these two ancient Biblical cycles. Like ripples in a pond or echoes in a canyon, one can’t help but wonder if the 7 year Sabbath cycle and the 50 year Jubilee cycle still effect history today. Another way of looking at it is the famous quote by Mark Twain: “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme”.

Admittedly the author sticks to a more secular aspect of the Biblical cycles as they relate to America and world financial markets, but let me tell you why I think his underlying premise has some merit. Using 7 year Sabbath cycles as Mr.

(TITLE OF REVIEW) The Mystery of the Shemitah – What You Need To Know

The Mystery of the Shemitah, Jonathan Cahn’s second book, following his massive bestseller, The Harbinger, is so unique and its claims and revelations so radical that it’s hard to know where to begin. I was among a few hundred people given an advance look at the book and so have sought to put together the most important facts for a reader to know.

The first thing to note, for those who have already read The Harbinger, is that the format is different. The Harbinger brings forth non-fiction revelations through a narrative. But in The Mystery of the Shemitah, Jonathan Cahn brings forth the revelations straight out in a non-fiction format.

The second thing is the title. The word Shemitah refers to Sabbath year observed in ancient Israel, when all working of the land ceased, the land rested. This took place every seventh year. On the last day of that year, all debts were wiped away, all credit was nullified, the financial accounts of the nation were, in effect, wiped clean.

Later on, in Israel’s history, as the nation turned away from God, the Shemitah became a sign and manifestation of judgment, the kingdom’s destruction in 586 B.C. and its exile in Babylon were timed to the years of the Shemitah.

Most people had never heard of the “shemitah” before The Harbinger came out. One of its fourteen mysteries was that of the Shemitah. That was the beginning of the mystery. If you have not read The Harbinger, it’s essential to read to understanding where we are and where we’re headed. And yet even this will not quite prepare you for what is in the new book.

Zero to One is a refreshing intellectual deep dive into the motives behind entrepreneurship.
It’s full of unique, practical insights, and discusses success in terms of human nature and culture. Along with business strategy, Thiel outlines how successful innovation shapes society and shares an intriguing vision.

Bottom line: This book was worth my time and refined several core beliefs. It made me ask hard questions which, as an entrepreneur, I believe are critical if you want to be honest and prepared.

I like the organized format which reads well linearly, but also allows you to read chapters in the order they interest you most, making key takeaways accessible to review and share.

It’s short enough to finish in a week, and deep enough to cover the entire lifecycle of a company.

Here are the seven questions Thiel writes “Every business must answer:"

1. Can you create breakthrough technology instead of incremental improvements?

2. Is now the right time to start your particular business?

3. Are you starting with a big share of a small market?

4. Do you have the right team?

5. Do you have a way to not just create but deliver your product?

6. Will your market position be defensible 10 and 20 years into the future?

7. Have you identified a unique opportunity that others don’t see?

These are from the “seeing green” chapter on profitability, and form a basis for much of the content.

Rather than offer scripts or formulas, Thiel discusses the logic of starting a company that will make a truly meaningful and unique impact on the world.

I had high hopes, but this book was just ok. I don’t understand the overwhelming number of 5 star reviews, other than people being swayed by the fact Thiel has crushed it on a few of his investments and is a well known name. I was really hoping for some brilliant insights here.

Instead, the book is basically a series of rambling, disjointed essays that spell out Thiel’s philosophies on the world, none of which are particularly earth shattering. One chapter he’s talking about the characteristics of a good startup founder, the next it’s visions for the future of humanity. Nothing is really backed up with any data-driven evidence, though he does bring in real-world examples to support many of his theories, which is nice. The rambling/meandering nature of the book’s sections in and of itself is forgivable – he’s an entrepreneur/investor, not a writer, after all – what bothered me more was that the majority of his points seemed to be conventional wisdom and not provide anything really new to the world.

That said, there were a few nuggets I got out of this book that were interesting, and some of the PayPal anecdotes were entertaining. But for the most part it’s a bunch of non sequiturs that flows like Thiel’s stream of consciousness.

Overall there seemed to be a few main points that can be summed up quickly:

-Common belief that monopolies are bad is wrong. Monopolies are actually good, because they create innovation. Competitive markets are bad because they destroy profits.

-Betting on a big and growing market isn’t enough (cleantech), you need to have some ‘secret sauce’ of some kind in order to be a great company (tesla).

-Entrepreneurs should think big, not incrementally.

-Not everything worth doing has already been done.

I realize some people find Rush caustic, but in my opinion, he is the most articulate torch-bearer of conservative ideals — namely, personal freedom and responsibility. This book is a much-needed addition to the conservative cause because it does three things exceptionally well: It entertains, it informs, and it manages to do so without grinding a political ax (honestly, I was surprised by this). This book is essentially a pop-history book aimed at 10-13 year-olds, but it will work well for younger kids and high-schoolers. And yes, adults will likely be tremendously entertained as well.

In some ways, the book feels sort of like the “Magic School Bus” series — Rush Revere, a middle school teacher, travels back in time to witness the Pilgrims. The schtick works, however unappealing it originally sounded to me, and the book does one very important thing (I cannot make this point clearly enough): it teaches the values of the Pilgrims and draws the connecting line between those values and modern conservatism. It does not “preach” modern conservatism into the Pilgrim narrative. I was quite concerned that Rush (as much as I love him) would do more of the latter than the former, and found this a pleasant surprise.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Five stars and two thumbs up!

If you read my Fire TV review you know that I am tough on Amazon when it comes to their own items. It needs to deliver quality for the price point to earn stars from me. Please take the time to read my entire review and feel free to ask questions. I will do my best to respond to them as I can and update the review to reflect those answers and other things I discover along the way.

First my background. I own many Amazon Kindles (b&w, Fire gen2, Fire gen3) as well as Apple Ipad (gen 4), Samsung Note 3 and have an LG G2 smartphone (had a Samsung S4 before that), notebooks, chromebooks, etc. I have also used many other products including the Fire HDX line. I have a solid computer background as well but honestly I am more of a casual user when it comes to tablets like this one.

Amazon has changed many things over the life of the Fire product line. Adding and removing features (like cameras–the first generation had one but the second generation removed them but not they are back).

They are all useful devices but each one has its own niche so to speak so make sure whatever you get has the features that are important to you.

Now to this model. This is like a big smartphone–which is a big difference from past kindles. It is more compact, lighter and yet still very usable. In fact for me, the shrinking of size increases the usefulness. I find that I use my smartphone way more than my tablets–even the smaller Fire HD and Samsung Note tablets so I am expecting this to replace more of that "on the couch" usage which is great since it so much less expensive than most smartphones. That means you can feel less bad about scratches that might occur or the accidental drops. (I am guilty of both.

I’ll preface this by saying that I own an iPad, and was not expecting a $99 tablet to perform at anywhere near that level. I have followed the early reviews closely, and after seeing enough satisfied customers, I figured I’d give the Kindle Fire HD 6 a try. I chose the base 8 GB with special offers and my plan was to use it as a secondary e-reader and a secondary or even tertiary vehicle for internet access. What I’ve found is a powerful little tablet, so far completely free of the bugs and laggy speeds mentioned in the early reviews. In fact, performance has so exceeded expectations that I consider this perhaps the year’s best purchase.

First off the look is nice. It’s sleek, (I ordered the black model) and though actually quite a bit heavier than I’d imagined, it’s not heavy enough to be considered a negative. The display is fantastic, and its quality was the first big surprise. The touch screen performs incredibly well, and to this point, I have experienced immediate response. To the point where I have to say touch response so far is indistinguishable from my iPad. Based on early reviews, this was not the case, so I have been quite pleasantly surprised. I read this book in two days flat and I know that, had I had the time, I would have read it in one sitting. This is a book that grips you, draws you in and leaves you feeling a slightly better person for having read it.

The story is that of Louie Zamperini – a track and field star of the 1930’s, who participated in the Berlin olympics, was part of the US air force in WWII, was shot down over the ocean, was adrift in the Pacific for over a month, was held as a POW by the Japanese forces and finally made it back to his life and has had the courage to live it to its fullest.

Hillenbrand is a marvellous author. I was never tempted to read Seabiscuit and this was my first introduction to her work. She is one of a few authors who can write a non fiction story in the most gripping and vivid way imaginable. Instead of being flowery or overly embellished her prose relies squarely on research and on witness accounts and yet manages to never be dull. The swiftly moving story takes the reader from Zamperini’s early beginnings, his swift rise to track star, the Berlin olympics and then to the World War. This is where the story really blooms. Hillenbrand settles in for the long haul here and we get to see the air force and the B24 bombers through the words of the men who actually flew them. The sequences where Zamperini and his friend Phil are adrift at sea are vivid and strangely beautifully described. The horrors that await them at the Japanese prison camps are not glossed over but neither does Hillenbrand wallow in the gore and violence as some authors may be tempted to do. There is always a strong sense of the respect the author holds for the men whose story she is being allowed to tell.

Louis Zamperini? Who is he? Laura Hillenbrand’s near 500-page reply will answer the question not only once, but for all. He is the California boy who was a kleptomaniac. He is the running prodigy who competed at Hitler’s Berlin Olympics, shook hands with the Fuhrer, and was almost shot by Nazi guards for stealing a Nazi souvenir. He is the American serviceman who entered the Pacific theater, crashed into the sea, and spent a harrowing forty-odd days floating on a disintegrating raft circled by aggressive sharks, scorched by a relentless sun, and gnawed to the bone by an inescapable hunger.

It’s been a few years since I wrote my original review for the earlier edition of this book. Back then, I was a student taking the exam in order to get into college. However as a tutor I have taken the exam multiple times since I applied to college, gotten a few more 2300+ scores, and now pass on my knowledge to the next generation of students vying for competitive college admissions. The first thing I tell my students to do is to buy the Official SAT Study guide. It’s simply the best. Why?

Well, first off, let me start with the changes to this new edition. It now has 10 practice tests, three of which are recycled from the new administration (now that they’ve given enough tests to disclose them) and seven from the original book. So I’ll say now that it may not be a good idea to buy this if you have the older edition, but this newer edition is much more useful since there are three *real* exams. Other than that, it’s pretty much the same as the old book.

The review sections are divided into three categories: critical reading, math, and writing. The reading section isn’t all that helpful. A few obvious test taking tips and some practice passages with explained answers. Good for a warmup, but not much else. The math section, the most substantial in the book, is pretty useful. It contains most of the facts from middle schoool/early high school math that you’ve likely forgotten by the time you’re a junior or a senior. It also has some sample problems to show you the kind of “out of the box” thinking you’ll have to do: SAT math isn’t a factual recall or “plug ‘n chug” exam, but the section does give you the facts you need to survive. And finally the writing section. The review section has a lot of information, including good writing habits as well as a set of grammar rules.

This is a GREAT learning tool for your toddler and is really fun to look at together.

I first came across these books after reading reviews on Amazon. I really wanted to get my son “My Big Word Book” but after reading that it was spiral-bound and that many reviewers had to tape it up several times, I decided against it. I think it is really just a compilation of all of the smaller books anyways.

I went to Wal-Mart and purchased “My Little Word Book”, which is a smaller version and is a board book. It features 300 pictures that are labeled. I really like it, but it has many flaws. Those flaws were corrected in this new Bright Baby book.

Just tonight I went to Target to look for some puzzles and ended up in the book section. As with most toddlers, my son was reaching and grabbing for the shelves. He recognized this book because some of the pictures are the same on the front cover as ours we already had. I picked it up and flipped through it and he wouldn’t let me put it back!

I’m a little disappointed that this book only has 100 words, but that’s probably a good thing. I really think that for a child under two, trying to show them 300 words is impossible with their attention spans. This book covers the basics of what they need to know, and once they learn these words, they will be ready for bigger books.

This book is very colorful and has clear, simple images that are labeled to help build your child’s vocabulary. The pictures are really eye-catching and are each on a colored background. The print underneath the pictures is big and bold.

Now that we have this one, I think I’m going to get rid of the other one or just use it for the parts that the Bright Baby book doesn’t include.

A few months ago I joined the Thomas Nelson Publishers blog book review team. What a novel idea. I signed up, agreed to write a review and publish it on my blog as well as one other commercial site. In exchange, I received the book I chose to review in the mail.

I chose “Jesus Calling,” a devotional by Sarah Young.

I was drawn to the content based on a few tweets from others reading the devotional. I grew up in my faith with the Oswald Chambers classic “My Utmost for His Highest.” I love my online devotional time on the Jesuit site [..]–one of my favourite experiences on the web. I also love Henri Nouwen’s “Bread for the Journey.”

Now “Jesus Calling” is fast becoming another classic in my life. Sarah Young writes what she hears Jesus speaking to her in her spirit. She has honed her listening through years and years of writing in her journal and being attentive to what the Spirit wants to say to her.

As I have spent time in “Jesus Calling, “I have heard Jesus speaking to me many times in beautiful, fresh ways. Sometimes I hear Sarah’s personal filter–she is the pen, the messenger, after all–but I also recognize this as the voice of my Shepherd.

Here are a few of my favourite calls:

* “Rest in My Presence, allowing Me to take charge of this day. Do not bolt into the day like a racehorse suddenly released. Instead, walk purposefully with Me, letting Me direct your course one step at a time.”

* “You are on the right path. Listen more to Me, and less to your doubts. I am leading you along the way designed just for you.”

* “You must discipline yourself to live within the boundaries of today. It is in the present moment that I walk close to you, helping you carry your burdens.

“Jesus Calling” is a relatively unique devotional book in that Sarah Young has written her devotions from the point of view of Jesus Christ. Using this technique gives the book a sense of immediacy and intimacy with the Lord, and this is the great strength of the book.

Many of these short sayings that Young puts in the mouth of Jesus are things the Lord would say and has said to me during a life of listening to Him, reading the Scriptures, and keeping a journal. How often have I heard Him remind me to worship Him alone, to trust in Him at all times, and that He is always with me. To hear these words as if they are Jesus’ own can be beneficial to the soul.

However, there are 4 reasons I can give “Jesus Calling” only 3 stars and not 4 or 5 stars, (even though I’m vastly outnumbered in the reviews on Amazon).

1. Young has Jesus say only a limited range of things compared to what God actually teaches in the entirety of the Bible. I love to hear Jesus say things like, “Relax; Trust Me; Listen to Me; I am with you; I am calling you; and Wait for Me.” But this seems to be all that Young’s Jesus ever says. Where are the specific commandments of Jesus, and not just “affirmations”? Where does this Jesus ever talk about the practical ways we should love our neighbor, and not just love God? And why is it always a solitary call to be alone with Him, when we’re called to be the Church?

2. “Jesus Calling” shows Young’s bias and doesn’t have Jesus say the hard things He must often say. Where are His reminders and commandments to seek forgiveness and to forgive, to love regardless of the cost, etc? This Jesus doesn’t seem ask us to do anything difficult or to sacrifice very much. It’s all “You are on the right path.

There are no chapters in this book. Is this a literary conceit, as in a writer playfully breaking rules, or is she making a point that what she has to say is so important that chapters might interfere with concentration? Since Robinson will never be accused of playfulness, and I don’t sense she’s dictatorial, I offer a third possibility: the lack of chapters (although there are section breaks) may be metaphoric. Because once you get into the story, you will become a wanderer, compelled to the journey, hungering for some bit of plot but only receiving as much as is necessary to give you enough energy to continue. You will be fed by stunningly compassionate depictions of the apparent worst in human behavior, and by contemplations of the divine, such that this will allow you to continue on through the sparse landscape that is Lila.

One of the high points for me, a reader who counts Gilead as one of her top five books of all time, was the return of the good Reverend Ames. This thoughtful, open-minded, generous man sees Lila as a gift, not only for her companionship but as a window into another dimension of human life and spirituality. Because while Lila is only a few degrees removed from feral, she is bright and curious, and her perspective is riveting if bleak. Indeed, her intellect causes her intense pain, hungering as she does for understanding about life on earth and her place in it – as don’t we all. In this, as with Ames’ tortured acceptance of his own mortality and that of his friend Boughton, the book touches universal chords.

This story primarily consists of internal monologue, and much of it is oblique, so if you are not drawn to that kind of writing, this may not be for you.

Lila voices that part of us that is fundamentally alone, and preternaturally outside the the bounds of society. I love this character. She is not the least cuddly in her wildness, and she knows only how to stand in the world she has learned. Marilynne Robinson has mastered that archetype of the loner ruled only by the internal truths of her ties to nature. Robinson has returned to Gilead, a poor town on the verge of collapsing to the surrounding wilderness, resisting only with the basic decency of its citizens. Robinson has woven a moral fiber which embraces the Bible as it is woven into the rules of empathy and natural order.

Lila was born into the ultimately neglectful family. She was found by Doll, alone on a porch and half dead at age of four. She and Doll wander the world in the days preceding the Dust Bowl. "Doll my have been the loneliest woman in the world, and she was the loneliest child." They were ruled by "Whatever happens, just be quiet, and it’ll pass, most likely." We find her years later, aged by the places she has seen, drawn to the world of Gilead. She has found a savior in the kind, old minister who has fallen in love with her. The courtship is the loveliest thing I have read in years. They come to value the comfort of the other standing by her shoulder. She has come to care for the kind old man and finds him beautiful. Their marriage is lyrical to me.

The ethical code in Robinson’s books is a rather lovely one. The old minister says, "Any judgment of the kind is a great presumption. And presumption is a very grave sin." Lila come to believe that the search for meaning is like knowing a song. "In a song a note follows the one before because it is that song and not another one.".

It crystallized in my mind in August 2008 when I first heard the venemous rants of Rev. Jeremiah Wright and some of the other radicals surrounding Democratic nominee Barack Obama on a radio talk show. I turned to the young man working next to me and mumbled “These people are planting the seeds of a civil war in this country.” Sadly, nothing I have seen or heard during the six years of the Obama administration has changed my mind one iota. Michael Savage has been an outspoken critic of the Obama administration and worries that the American people are dangerously close to the breaking point. He lays out his case in an explosive new book “Stop the Coming Civil War: My Savage Truth”. While not as gifted a writer as Mark Levin or Pat Buchanan, Dr. Savage does a workmanlike job of presenting a cornucopia of well-documented evidence to support his contention. Furthermore, Savage insists that our esteemed President knows precisely what he is doing and has precious little regard for the Constitution, due process or the rule of law. The situation we are all living through is unprecedented in the history of our nation.

According to Savage, Obama has succeeded in dramatically weakening our military. He has accomplished this by tossing aside top brass who do not agree with his worldview. Before reading this book, I thought Lena Dunham could do no wrong. I love all three seasons of Girls, I’ve bought magazines I’d never previously read simply because she graced their covers, and I’ve read all of her online essays. This book is, however, too much Lena. While there are flashes of brilliance in the book, like the essays on the hard-to-define rape she suffered, the teacher who tried to sexually abuse her, and the struggles she’s had with being taken seriously by male execs in Hollywood, the majority of the book is filled with musings about her life that are simply boring. I get that Lena believes that standing up and telling your story is the bravest thing anyone can do, but your story has to be interesting in order to be worthy of being published. That’s where this book has gone wrong–the publisher clearly thought that anything written by Lena would be lapped up by readers. With each individual essay, her editors clearly didn’t step back and ask, ‘Is this really worth publishing?’. If they had, the book would be about two-thirds shorter.
The title is also misleading, as Lena does not appear to have learned very much, or rather, she doesn’t take much interest in imparting her knowledge to her readers. This book has primarily taught me that Lena Dunham is excruciatingly self-obsessed and lacking virtually any self-awareness. She appears to believe that her musings on virtually anything are nothing short of brilliant, no matter how dull and irrelevant the subject matter. The reprinting of several pages of her food diary is perhaps the best illustration of this –a verbatim regurgitation of what she ate for about a week while she was allegedly on a ‘diet’ (it’s really just a pretty standard day’s eating for most people) is supposed to communicate what exactly?

I confess I had never heard of Lena Dunham before now; her book was recommended to me as a ‘hilarious collection of personal essays’ by someone who knows I love that kind of writing. So I went into this expecting great things from the writing itself, as well as great stories from someone who publishers apparently felt had something to say.

Where do you even start to describe the appalling narcissism that is this book? I realize that memoir, by its very nature, requires a fair amount of navel-gazing. But this is so self indulgent, so arrogant in its assumption that anyone could possibly care about such meaningless insights as ‘dieting is hard — here, look at what I ate for a couple of weeks’ that it’s hard to feel sorry for the author even when she’s telling us something more substantive and painful, like ‘I didn’t realize I was raped because I was so drunk and high I stupidly took a guy I hated home with me rather than admit that I thought he was someone else.’

After a couple dozen pages, I became curious about this author, about why she was such a ‘big deal’ that she could get away with writing such garbage. And I saw that she had made her mark in television and a couple of films. Won a few awards. Did so at a young age.

And…? Nope. That’s it. At the ripe old age of 28 she had ‘learned’ enough and accomplished enough that readers would certainly be wowed by admissions that she checked out her little sister’s vagina while they were playing, or that she routinely abused drugs and alcohol and felt no shame about sleeping with anyone and everyone.

My advice, young Lena? Don’t write another word about yourself for twenty-eight more years. Grow up. Think about other people as something besides bit players in The Lena Show.

There are two extreme ways to interpret this book, as shown by the multiple ratings of 1 and 5.

The first: This is a beautiful and sad story of unconditional love between a tree and a boy, in which the tree is generous and gives of itself to help the boy whenever he is in trouble. The metaphor in this case is that of a mother and a child, or God and a human.

The second: This is a story of a very selfish boy and a tree who loves him. Whenever he is in trouble, he returns to the tree who gives him another part of her self without ever setting limits, even though it makes her sad (and physically damages her) to do so. In this case, you can compare the story to a metaphor of an abusive, codependent relationship.

I can understand both views of this story, but the fact that the second interpretation is just as valid as the first makes me hesitate to recommend this book. Personally, I would NOT buy this book as a gift, or for my own children. If I had this book, I would wait to read it to my children until they reach the recommended 10 years old (or at least 8), and then I would discuss the book and its concepts (selfishness, limit setting/saying NO) with them. “What did you think of this book?” “Do you think that the tree/the boy did the right thing?” “What would you have done differently if you were the tree/the boy?” “If you were the tree, would you have said ‘NO’ to the boy at any point?”

A story that may be complementary to this one and more appropriate for younger audiences is “Ladies First”, also by Shel Silverstein (found in “A Light in the Attic” or “Free to Be, You and Me”), which is about a girl who always gets to be first to do everything, but in the end that is not to her advantage.

The Monster Manual has been reviewed in-depth by several sources already, but I received my comp copy from Wizards of the Coast a little late (I’m sure it was just an oversight…) so I’m only just now getting to my own review of the world’s most famous tome of monsters — with the exception of The Monster Book of Monsters from the Harry Potter universe. Good news: The Monster Manual will not try to eat you. It may try to eat your players however.

* Keeping it simple: The first rule of The Monster Manual is that it’s not going to try super hard to encompass every single variant of every single monster. Is a monster proficient with its weapons (page 9)? Yeah, sure. Are we going to list its armor and equipment? No we’re not, and who would want stinky monster equipment anyway? This fits nicely with 5E’s approach of keeping things simple.

* High fantasy with a touch of humor: The artwork ranges from high fantasy-style watercolors to little sketches and doodles. There is no joy quite like seeing an otyugh galumph along at high speed (page 8), its tentacles streaming behind it like a dog’s ears. Also, all the women are clothed, including repeat offenders like the marilith, dryad, and succubus (an entire film has been dedicated to the teenage boy fantasies ignited by the sight of a naked succubus in the original Monster Manual).

* Legendary monsters: Many of the monsters are reimagined, and others have been given a place as legendary monsters that change the terrain and have special powers in their lair. Aboleths, beholders, demiliches, mummies, unicorns, vampires, and dragons among others. Also, the tarrasque.

* We call it Dungeons & Dragons for a reason: Dragons take up a large chunk of the book, as well they should.

The Good:
- A lot of monsters, and all the classics
- More, better organized info about each monster, and like literally EVERY MONSTER. 4E’s MM has way too little, and 3.x’s MM had uneven amounts of information.
- Drop-And-Go NPC’s. Several pages of humanoid NPC’s in the back of various CR’s, all grouped up conveniently.
- 24 PAGES of miscellaneous animals and creatures. These are the types of things that just claw-claw-bite, and don’t have a pathos or special abilities.
- Way better layout than previous editions. They more or less kept it to a monster a page. It feels much more like the sort of whimsical bestiary you’d see in a fancy wizarding movie or cartoon.
- Down-N-Dirty explanation of anything a DM would need to know about monsters, making the book function entirely on its own. They repeat only what’s necessary in the intro section
- Not a bunch of non-info pages/advertisements in the back. Open the back cover and there’s the Index.
- Awesome Cover. Nice and thick, very high quality feeling.
- The art is incredible. I know this seems like an afterthought, but the art really is fantastic and expressive. 4E’s art often looked overly animated or cartoonish, and 3E’s art often looked like something out of a field guide book. Neither of these are inherently bad, but the 5E MM strikes a balance that hits a sweet spot.

The Bad:
- Owlbears look dumb now. This is important. 3E Owlbear or GTFO
- Mechanically, inside a vacuum, just from looking, I feel like I want some of the more challenging monsters to just do more. There seems to be some mechanical redundancy.

On the coast of Maine lives a wealthy ninety-one year old woman named Vivian Daly. Yet in her attic are trunks that reveal the secrets of her turbulent past.

It is the year 2011, and nearby in the same town of Spruce Harbor, lives a seventeen-year-old girl named Molly Ayer who has bounced from foster home to foster home, and is now in a situation involving petty theft that will require some kind of community service.

Told in beautifully evocative prose, the story unfolds in alternate perspectives, revealing what has happened to each of them, and how the parallel lines of their lives now converge to spotlight the similarities between them.

From Vivian’s early childhood in Ireland, to New York City, comes her passage on the Orphan Trains in 1929. A journey that will take her to Minnesota, from one home to another, never really knowing what home feels like, as she is treated like a slave and seldom has enough of anything, much less affection or love.

What Molly sees when she meets the elderly woman is a wealthy person who could not begin to understand her or her issues. But as the two of them clean out the boxes in the attic, the stories they share with one another reveal so much more than either could have suspected.

The characters, both the primary ones and the supporting ones, brought so much color and emotion to the stories that I could feel as though I were sitting in their midst, observing and listening to them. And as I neared the end of

I continue to be amazed at the things I learn about the history of this country from reading books. Orphan Train is based in fact; from the mid 19th century through the first quarter of the 20th century there was no system for dealing with orphans or what we would consider foster children today. It was left to churches and charitable organizations. And for those who feel that they are best left to deal with these social issues, I suggest you research the orphan trains because their solution was to take the children into various cities and give them away to anyone who wanted a child. No background checks, no follow up, no nothing. These children were left with people in the hopes that they would be given a good life. Some were, many were nothing more than house slaves. I’ll get off the soapbox now.

The book juxtaposes two lives – that of young Molly, a foster child of the current generation who lives with a family that is divided as to her presence. The “father” is pleasant to her and sees the good in Molly but the “mother” would rather she be gone and in all truth is only doing the foster thing for the money it brings into the household. The second life is that of Vivian – born Niamh, who becomes Dorothy and ultimately Vivian as she is left alone in New York after her family is killed in a fire. She is taken in by Children’s Aid and sent West on an Orphan Train to hopefully find a new home. What she finds at first is mistreatment, suspicion and abuse.

While on the train she meets some other orphans one of whom will play an important role in her life. Most of the other characters, though fade into the background as the story focuses on Vivian and Molly and how the two of them reconcile their pasts which are not as different as they might think.
